FIRST WHO, THEN WHAT

I was recently listening to Jim Collins refresh of Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0, and it was striking how much he added to his legendary section regarding "Getting the Right People on the Bus." For those who aren't familiar, Jim popularized the sentiment of first getting the right people in the right positions (and the wrong people out of the wrong positions) in Good to Great, almost 20 years ago.

In my humble opinion, this philosophy may be most prescient in service businesses. People are your capital, directly, there are no machines, no real estate, no software to hide behind, it is people front and center.

Especially as we come out of COVID and folks are recalibrating priorities, it is a great time to revisit Jim's great insights.

When facing chaos and uncertainty, and you cannot possibly predict what's coming around the corner, your best "strategy" is to have a busload of people who can adapt to and perform brilliantly no matter what comes next.
