Wisconsin remains entrenched in the minority of states without medical or recreational legalization of cannabis. With the exception of Indiana, the Badger State is surrounded by states in which cannabis has been legalized in some capacity. Citizens and lawmakers who support legalization in Wisconsin were encouraged by a recent report quoting Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R) as saying that his caucus was "getting pretty close on medical marijuana" provided that the process was well-regulated. 

However, a few days later, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R) blunted this optimism by declaring that conversations regarding medical use were just beginning, and signaling that Wisconsin's Republican legislators would extinguish any support for medical legalization if Governor Tony Evers includes recreational legalization in conjunction with the presentation of his forthcoming budget.   

These positions put Wisconsin's Republican caucus at odds with not only the national trends, but also their constituents, as recent polling indicates that the majority of Wisconsinites approve some form of legalization.
