As “X day” approaches with no resolution in sight for America’s debt ceiling crisis, federal contractors may be stuck holding the bag. Several experts agree that should the government default, payments to federal contractors are not likely to be prioritized. There’s a fair amount of conjecture about just how bad it may get for small businesses and other contractors who rely on the federal government for a significant portion of their business. However, regardless of whether any of these predictions come to fruition, one thing is certain. If the government defaults on its obligations, it will lose its status as a “safe bet” consumer.
