Department of Defense leaders have reported skyrocketing costs for replacing munitions expended in support of Ukraine. The cause…alleged price gouging stemming from the consolidation of fifty-one major defense contractors to five mammoth ones back in the early 1990s and the cutting of 130,000 government employees who were responsible for negotiating and overseeing defense contracts. The combination of those two decisions transferred what is arguably an inherently governmental function—making decisions that are in the best interests of the warfighter and the taxpayer—from the government to corporations.
